POTD: Shooting The Barrett M107 A1

Photo Of The Day and we go back to a recent event in Texas where I was kindly allowed to shoot one of my dream guns. The Barrett M107 A1 is a beast of a rifle that we see in various images, but only a few have seen one live. To get the opportunity to actually shoot one was quite the experience.

Chambered in .50 BMG, or 12.7×99 mm, this is a round that requires a lot of respect. The Barrett M107 A1 alone weighs 13 kilograms. On top of that add a Pulsar Thermion 2 thermal riflescope, a fully loaded magazine, and the biggest suppressor I have ever seen and we’re talking a rifle beyond 20 kilograms (40+ pounds). From a balance standpoint, with its 29” barrel a lot of the weight is located in the wrong end. For reasons unknown, I tried to shoulder the Barrett standing, but it was just too heavy to hold for me.

Here’s a sequence from the shooting. As you can see, there’s a lot of gas coming back, nothing that I noticed.

Note the spent cartridge flying just above the table.

This suppressor is an absolute beast. It’s called the QDL Suppressor. It is said to reduce the decibel by about 23 dB. The weight is 4.88 lbs (2.21 kg) and it’s made out of 4130 Steel. It’s a Quick Detach with a 1/4 Turn Lock Ring.

So how was it? To be honest, I was super nervous about the kick from the recoil and as the second shooter, I was pretty sure I was going to get a black eye from the riflescope. However, thanks to the sheer weight of the rifle itself, the barrel assembly absorbs a lot of the recoil so it was not bad at all.

Thanks a lot to my new friend that_gun_guy_ for letting me shoot his potato thrower. Give his Instagram a follow for more.

Did you ever shoot your dream gun? Which one is it, and how did it feel?
