The Mist (1980) novella

Stephen King’s 1980 novella The Mist, originally published as a short story of the same title and later a 2007 movie, contains a far bleaker ending than what was depicted in the movie, though that too was pretty horrific. The movie pretty well follows the novella up until the point at which the group of characters including the “hero”, David Drayton, leave the supermarket to try and escape. The impression you are left with in the novella is that The Mist has enveloped all of Massachusetts and possibly even more of the New England states so that the end of the world may very well be at hand. The Mist is in many ways a precursor to Stephen King’s epic novel Under the…

Seattle Superstorm (2012) TV movie

A Soviet Union Cold War experiment gone bad may spell not only the end of Seattle, Washington, but also the world in the 2012 apocalyptic thriller Seattle Superstorm. First broadcast in Canada on April 7, 2012, this TV movie gives new meaning to the phrase, The family that fights the apocalypse together, stays together. Not only were the effects about as believable as those in many 1950s and 1960s mutant monster movies from Hollywood and Japan, but the plot was atrocious and the acting just passable. Not to give away too much, but how was it that the key Soviet scientist involved in the experiment just happened to turn up in Seattle the day the orbiting craft carrying a…

Stonehenge Apocalypse ( 2010) TV movie

A completely ludicrous and unbelievable doomsday scenario, the 2010 TV movie Stonehenge Apocalypse literally starts off with a bang when an underground archaeological dig in Maine, which appears to have uncovered something left by the ancient Egyptians, triggers an energy surge and causes a mysterious movement of the monolithic stones at Stonehenge, England. And it’s all downhill from there, beginning with the lone conspiracy theorist who flies to England to start his own investigation into one of the Mayan pyramids at Chicen Itza which also mysteriously moves and turns into a nuclear bomb-like exploding volcano.

Dear Waitrose, please dump Shell this Christmas

Waitrose – aren’t they meant to be one of the more ethical supermarkets, a green leader? Well in many ways they are – Greenpeace’s oceans team has worked closely with Waitrose in the past to help them source their fish more sustainably and we know many of those who shop at Waitrose, do so to make an ethical choice. But back in April we were shocked to learn that Waitrose had a new friend, and that this friend, Shell, was one of the most destructive and exploitative oil companies in the world. Greenpeace are campaigning hard to save the Arctic from oil drilling. The Arctic is one of the last remaining wild places on the planet, and a vitally important eco-system, home to unique species …

Recapturing the freedom of artisanal fishing

Being an artisanal fisherman is synonymous with freedom, says Gwen Pennarun, from Saint Marine, Brittany. At least, it used to be. Today, Gwen says, you have to go fishing when the fish is there. Unsustainable and destructive fishing methods, often by industrial boats, have contributed to over 70{660353129f8d892044c993645a1c75194301fec6786a7f617c15adde0b0011e9} of our fish stocks being depleted. Small scale fishermen like Gwen, who have been fishing responsibly for generations, are increasingly concerned for the health of our seas. Gwen is the president of an association which promotes line-caught sea bass in Brittany and which is dedicated to promote the values of pole and line fishing: authenticity, passion and a conviction that they can and must fish in a way that is sustainable and respectful. They …

The alternative Autumn Statement

The sun shines on a new Britain, powered by clean renewable energy Image caption: The sun shines on a new Britain, powered by clean renewable energy This morning, the Chancellor George Osborne gave his Autumn Statement. People on Twitter say he’s launched a dash for gas that would wreck our climate targets and make us the Dirty Man of Europe all over again. But that can’t be right, because my boss, John Sauven, got hold of an advanced copy of the speech. It’s meant to be confidential, but I nicked it of off his desk and thought I’d share it with you all.Mr Speaker, let me start by saying this is a statement for green growth, for investment, for UK…

After 40,000 emails from you, several store visits, one spoof video, hundreds of Facebook posts, a social media meltdown, and the appearance of a life-size polar bear at their Islington store yesterday, Waitrose has declared support for the protection of the fragile Arctic. Shell’s Arctic oil rig hits the rocks

All rights reserved. The ancient rig was being towed back to harbour after a spectacularly unsuccessful summer drilling season when it ran into serious trouble and hit the shore.Last Thursday the Kulluk was being towed back from the Arctic by Shell’s brand new $200m tug the Aiviq when it hit heavy weather in the gulf of Alaska that caused …

At last, a victory for sustainable fishing

All rights reserved. Credit: © Greenpeace Yesterday morning in chilly Brussels I joined small scale fishermen and Greenpeace campaigners who had travelled from all over Europe to demonstrate together outside the European Council Building. We were there to remind ministers to put the health of our oceans first, in the reform process of the European laws that govern our seas. Melanie Laurent, French film star of Inglourious Basterds fame, joined us. But despite having a star in our midst, the fishermen stole the show with politicians coming over to say hello, listen to their stories, and European press asking for interviews. What happened next quite frankly took us all by surprise: politicians voted on bold and sweeping reform, dedicated to bringing Europe’s fish stocks back to…
