Bargain fire starters,
I use ferro rods more than matches these days. These little ferro rods are just the thing for placing in small kits. I keep one on me most of the time. Getting three of these little rods for the price is a good deal. Most places sell on of this size ferro rod for the price of the three you get from Elk Ridge. Don’t fret not having a striker for each as you can use any high carbon steel to produce a shower of sparks. Take an old hacksaw blade or worn out sawzall blace and make your own striker if you want. This is one of the best bargains I’ve seen in ferro rods.

Good Buy,
I have just received this today and put it to the test. All three of them are new and in good working condition. You do have to scrape the stuff off before you can generate a spark but I started a fire in our fireplace using one of them. I still think that a strike force fire starter is better but this is a really good back up. I have one in my bag, one in my ladies bag and the other one in our vehicle.

Small,
These are significantly smaller than I was expecting. They are 1 1/2″ long and 1/4″ in diameter. While the diameter is not of much concern to me, (although they will not last as long as thicker rods), the length is.
I prefer my fire-starters to be at least 2″ long so that I can get a healthy dose of sparks. These rods do create a decent spark, especially when used with a high carbon knife blade, (read: not stainless steel), there just isn’t a lot of sparks due to the shorter rod.
That said, this is a fair value for three rods. I have them scattered in various locations where I may need them, ie; hunting gear, camping gear, and under a Ranger band on the sheath of my KA-BAR.
