The Oregon cordless chainsaw (and other name brands). Battery powered. Convenient. Effective. I did my research and chose one. I’ve used it for years, and it has its place side-by-side with my Stihl gas-powered chainsaw. It’s great for general-purpose home use, and I really like it for prepping and preparedness. Give me a few minutes and I’ll tell you more about this one, and the benefit of having a cordless chainsaw (any cordless chainsaw).
Several years ago, I bought a battery-powered (40-volt) electric cordless chainsaw and couldn’t be happier.
You might be wondering, why would I buy a battery-powered chainsaw if I already have a gas chainsaw? Won’t the cordless one be less powerful than my gas-powered Stihl, for example? What’s good about a cordless chainsaw?
Good questions!
While researching, I was wondering about these questions myself. But I took a chance. And let me tell you, my 40-volt Oregon cordless chainsaw is no wimp! And I’m sure other well-known brands are great too.
The 16-inch has been perfect for me in this regard. I’ll warn you that the Oregon cordless chainsaw is not cheap. My philosophy is to look for the best (or among the best) for certain things that are important for one reason or another. And this is one of those things, at least for me…

First, I’m not claiming it’s entirely comparable to a gas chainsaw. However, I will tell you that the 40-volt power is excellent. This coupled with a chain that voraciously chews through wood makes it incredibly efficient. I have had no problems quickly slicing through trees or limbs with this cordless chainsaw.

For Prepping and Preparedness
“One is none, and two is one”, so it’s a backup to my gas chainsaw. However, one reason I like it is the ability to recharge the battery. No gas, no problem. Any of the many solar generators will provide power for this. A long-term SHTF? No worries.

Do you have an off-grid alternative energy solar-powered setup? Then you’ll always have the ability to charge a cordless chainsaw. It’s another tool in my toolbox for prepping and preparedness.
Another related prepping and preparedness attribute is that it’s much quieter than a gas chainsaw (if that becomes a concern along the timeline of events).
Though the Oregon cordless chainsaw is expensive, others cost less (although I cannot attest to their value since I only own Oregon).
The EGO Power+ is a popular cordless 16-inch chainsaw. 56-volts and 5.0 Ah battery too. Given its high Amazon ratings and reviews, it’s worth looking at.

A Cordless Chainsaw is Quick and Easy to use
Seriously. You pick it up, pull the trigger, and it’s ON. When you first start using one, it’s strange if you’re used to a gas chainsaw. It’s pretty neat! Instant on.

No carburetor/choke on a Cordless Chainsaw
A gas chainsaw can be a bit of a pain in cold weather, dealing with the choke and getting it to run. Sure, a well-tuned saw will start up okay, but just saying that the cordless is instant on. Period.
No Gasoline
No gasoline, jugs, no mess. Just bar chain oil.
Battery Longevity.
I did buy my 40-volt cordless chainsaw with a 6.0 Ah battery for the longest run-time. Many come with a 4.0 amp-hour battery, which is likely adequate for most situations. Run times of 30 – 50 minutes (check the specs). The ideal scenario is to have two batteries. Though it’s expensive to buy a 2nd battery, you’ll always have one extra ready to go.

Modern battery technology has enabled a seemingly endless lineup of cordless powered tools. The chainsaw is one of them worth considering.
I recommend choosing a recognized brand to ensure company longevity and potential future parts or services. I also recommend choosing one with at least a 4.0 Ah lithium battery (most seem to have this, but I’ve seen some with a lesser battery). Read the reviews about your potential choice.
Even if you plan to purchase in a big box store, I still find it helpful to check it on Amazon first, to read the reviews and check the ratings.
