    OK, I have reviewed the HeatSheet blanket and Bivvie before, it’s a great product for survival where space and weight are significant considerations- the two person size or the bivvie weigh about 3oz, and are about the size of a bar of soap.

    At the far end of the scale would be a good high quality military surplus wool blanket- 6+ pounds. Good for a roomy trunk, your SUV, cabin or in the home.

    Here, in the middle is the “Space’ or “All Weather” blanket. A super tough laminate of fiber scrim and aluminized plastic, it weighs 12oz, and is about the size of a trade paperback book. There are several advantages of the “space blanket” (note the name is also used for the super-thin one-use mylar blankets, don’t get them confused):
    1. Re-usable over and over, these will take a beating.
    2. More uses- they can be used as a tarp, picnic blanket, or on the floor of your tent to protect the tent bottom and reflect heat back. This is my primary use, I find that one of these- PLUS a pad- works about twice as well as a pad only.
    3. They have grommets so are easier to use.
    4. In the desert, they make a good sun protection tarp.

    So, if one can afford the weight and room, I’d suggest one of these for survival purposes on a hiking trip (one of these plus a HeatSheet bivvie would be even better). Yes, another 12 oz is a little much, but with one of these for two hikers, it’s not so bad.

    On the other end of the scale, if you don’t want a big heavy wool blanket cluttering up your trunk- or want another layer in “cold country” then this is also a good choice. It’s also good for the office.

    Get the orange/silver version, as it works for signaling too.

    I use these to keep warm at my kid’s sporting events. I also keep one in my car and take one when I go camping/hiking. They are much tougher (and I think they work better) job than the plain mylar sheet. When I was new to hiking, I made the mistake of wearing all cotton materials on a hike (not a good idea due to water retention). I live in Western Washington and, big surprise, it rained on me. I found myself at about 6000 feet, soaking wet, and freezing (very stupid on my part). It took about 60 seconds from the time I wrapped up in one of these to get comfortably warm. Another added plus is that it features eyelets so you can tie down if you need to. It is very light, in fact, I have started carrying one with me in my laptop bag when I go to work.

    My husband works on the pipeline in Ohio. He used to be in the Marine Corps for 13 years and spent many nights in the cold during training, so he familiar with similar products. I purchased this blanket because he stays on the yard in an unheated camper most nights. He uses this blanket with his sleeping bag and he said “wow, what a difference” he is very comfortable now even on the coldest of nights.

    There is a con – it is stiffer than it looks in the picture, very similar to the typical rescue blankets that you see out there. It is silver on the inside not fuzzy green as it is portrayed in the picture. That is very misleading. However, we have tried both and this one comes out on top.
