How to Make Improvised Arrowheads with Simple Tools for a Survival Bow & Arrow in Modern Times
A Guest Blog Post by Dave Meade Overview You will learn how to make what I consider to be the best and simplest arrowhead for hunting, and we will discuss items you might already have laying around, collecting dust, that could be turned into an awesome improvised arrowhead with simple hand tools. Broadhead made from found items at minimal cost. For thousands of years, rock has been used to make hunting points, via the skill of knapping. But what if you live where there is no flint, chert, dacite, or obsidian? Are you to starve because you do not live …
Last-Minute Coronavirus Quarantine Supplies: What to Buy (and Where to Get It) When the Stuff You Want Is Sold Out
This article was originally published by Daisy Luther at The Organic Prepper. Do you have the horrible feeling you may have waited too long to purchase supplies for the possibility of quarantine due to the Covid-19 outbreak sweeping the United States? While it’s true that shelves across the nation are bare in some departments, there are still options. In this article, I’ll suggest some last-minute emergency supplies you can purchase in place of the ones you wanted if you’ve waited too late to shop. To do this, you may have to cast away your plans of being organic and healthful, and you may not get the exact household products you…
Foment in the ferments part 3
Well someone has to say it – if you’re going to make your own Christmas cake you need to start planning it just about now. I know no-one wants to think about Christmas yet (OK just me then) but it has to be done. They not only take time to make, but you also need time to feed it with alcohol, marzipan it and then ice it. Each step needs time before progressing to the next. And this type of cake improves for the keeping, I think. A couple of months is just about right. Many folk have their own favourite recipe and this is mine, which means that it’s made from spelt flour and also sourdough – how could it be any other? …
FAT GUYS IN THE WOODS: BLOG SKILL SERIES: Live Capture Box trap
Many of you have asked for more details about the Live Capture Box trap that Bill, Dave, Andrew and I used to catch the Quail. Â To my knowledge, this is a trap style that originates in Asia but versions of it exist all over the world. Â It’s very unique in that it can be constructed from all natural materials. Â Below I detail the trap design as well as the trigger I normally pair with it. It all starts with 2 pieces of cordage and 2 sticks… A length of cordage is tied between the ends of two sticks. Â When tied, the length of rope should be a little longer (6 or so inches) than the sticks. Â The shape at this point should …
Can Your Food Storage Keep You Alive During a Doomsday?
There has been a lot of talk about of the world ending recently due to the Mayan calendar. The calendar was suppose to abruptly on December, 21st, 2012. Since we all clearly saw nothing happened and we are all living today, there was no doomsday. However, since some people did believe that this was going to happen, some people were smart and stocked up on emergency supplies which honestly is not a bad idea. With the economy collapsing, war raging out of control, diseases spreading, and stronger hurricanes, earthquakes, blizzards, and other storms, becoming a prepper isn’t such a bad idea. A prepper is a person who stores a large amount of food and water inside their home. …

Can You Really Live Off Beans in a Survival Situation?
A classic survival item preppers like to stockpile are legumes (especially beans). Inexpensive, nourishing, and easy to store. But are beans easy to cook? How about easy to digest? “I’d rather be shot than live off beans,” says John C. A. Manley, a prepper I interviewed in last month’s Survival Joe Mastermind Club meeting. “I love the taste of beans. They fill me up. But boy are most beans both hard to cook and even harder digest.” If you’re stocking your pantry full of dried kidney beans, you may want to test them out first. As Manley pointed out in our interview, beans often require soaking overnight. And then you still need to slow cook them for…

Cooking With Cast Iron Over Camp Fire
During the recent Do It Yourself World survival training weekend we learned how to cook with cast iron cookware over a camp fire. This may sound simple, but there are certain techniques involved in cooking with an open fire. You cannot control the fire temperature as easily as you can with the stove top in your house. Cast iron is rugged and perfect for cooking right over the coals of a fire. You can boil water, bake bread and slow cook some fine meals with cast iron. You can even fry eggs. You should practice using your survival gear and survival food stash now when you have time. When your life depends on it is not the time to learn how to cook in the wilds…
