Todays Item of the Day is the 50 Lb. Automatic Poultry Feeder by Vevor. If you order one make sure to use my special discount code (VVPROMO) at check out for an additional 5% off. For full disclosure Vevor did provide me this product for the purpose of this review. I will also say had they not done so I’d be happy to pay the 57 bucks for it if I had to.
As you guys know we have kept duck flocks along with some chickens for almost all of our time at Nine Mile Farm here near Azle, Texas. We have used a variety of feeding solutions but in the end we simply were feeding from shallow pans. As I was checking out the Vevor Website I came across this and reached out to our rep about sending us one and she was good enough to do so. Bluntly I should of done this a long time ago.
50Lbs is a perfect size, exactly one sack of feed. With out current head count of about 30 birds this is right about one week of feeding as well. There is a lot to love about the design here. First let me say, Vevor says these are made with galvanized steel, it sure seems like stainless to me though. Either way it is clearly built to last.
Not a lot can go wrong with a feeder of this design it is essentially a box with a hopper and a lid. There is a lot to love about it though. First unless you really have a driving rain coming in from the front side it is pretty much rain proof. And while birds can still be a bit messy they really can’t empty the feeder with scratching as chickens so often do.
The video at the end shows some mounting considerations if you are not using a flat wall. All I did was use a scrap bit of lumber to keep it level and flat. All it mounting it to the poll I used took no more than 5 minutes. I often measure jobs in beers. Like this green house is a 6 pack job, this table is a 1 beer job. Well this feeder is a zero beer job, takes you longer to go get a beer than just get it done.
Vevor does have some other feeder options, including a version of this one that is only 30 pounds but even on sale it costs almost as much as the 50 pound one so I’d go with the larger version. They also have a 22 pound capacity free standing feeder that looks like a big metal song bird feeder. I may pick up one of those smaller ones myself to have the flexibility for a feeder I can move around and to review it for you guys as well.
They also have this automatic rat proof feeder that hold 25 pounds as well. As I noted in my video I do not recommend the rat proof feeders for ducks though, only chickens. Here is why. Ducks are easily freaked out by things that chickens simply don’t care about. I have found that ducks are scared by things that move when they step on them, make noises, etc. So if you want a trap door feeder for your chickens have at it, but if you have ducks or geese I recommend sticking to a simple hopper feeder.
One more thing to note on the rat proof style. These feeders have a plate the birds step on and their weight opens the feeder so they can get to it. This works well, as even a big rat is just not able to depress the plate and eat at the same time. They simply are not shaped like chickens. However, young chicks and even some smaller bantams may have trouble using this type of feeder so be aware of that.
In any event you can really reduce your labor and protect your feed investment with one of these. So check out the 50 Lb. Automatic Poultry Feeder by Vevor today and spend more time doing things other than hauling feed around on your homestead. And remember you can also check out the other feeder options and you can always shop for anything Vevor makes with my link and code (VVPROMO) and get an additional 5% off even when they are having sales and specials.
